50 Shades of Green or How to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Nowadays people celebrate public holidays mainly like Thanksgiving Day, the 4th of July, or Columbus Day. However, there is still a number of secular feasts which are honored and celebrated by millions of Americans. One of such holidays is St. Patrick’s Day that is celebrated on the 17th of March. In New Your and Boston, the numerous parades are traditionally held on this day. In other locations, the celebrations are less massive. The Irish Roots of the celebration

St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday of Ireland. The feast is named after an outstanding man who was born in Ireland about 400 years of our era. He is considered to be one of the dignified and venerated saints in Christianity. There are more than 2000 cathedrals and churches built in his honor all over the globe. However, people know only a few actual facts about the life of the Patron. The curious thing is that Patrick was not actually Irish. He was born in Wales and had Italian roots. The Patron brought Christianity to Ireland. His main task was to teach Christianity rights to people. With the help of shamrock, the man managed to explain the essence of the Holy Trinity.  There are a lot of legends and tales about the Saint. One of the most popular is about the ability to banish snakes. Of course, the snakes are a personification of Paganism.

In America, this holiday is widely spread because there are more than 34 million of the Irish who live in the U.S. An amusing fact is that in the population of the Republic of Ireland is only about 4,5 million.

Parades. on the 17th of March, the greatest parades take place in New York, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, and many other cities. Not only native Irish take part in the festivals. A lot of Americans join the celebration. People wear their best clothes mainly in green color.

The green color is considered to be the color of St. Patrick’s Day. People decorate their houses and streets, wear malachite suits and wigs. In Chicago, even the river is painted green.

Shamrock is one of the main symbols of the holiday. Children are looking for the shamrocks with 4 leaves. It is believed that such a flower will bring happiness, healthiness, and gladness.

Leprechauns are magic little men with beard. They are rather tricky creatures. However, if you are lucky to meet one of them, it’s better to try to capture him. If you manage to do it, you can barter his freedom for his pot full of gold.

In California, there are a lot of things to do on the St. Patrick’s Day. You can visit the nearest pubs and drink a couple of traditional Irish beers. If you want to take part in one of the parades, you have only to choose the one you like more. For example. In San Diego, ShamRock festival proposes a diversity of bands and entertainment for 21+ visitors.  In San Franciso, the largest and oldest parade will take place on the 16th of March, and it’s perfect even for the whole family.
